BlueBook/BluePool BETA Notes

Warning

BluePool BETA (and its host applications) may not work in some cases. Wireless interference, large distances between devices, different versions of Mac OS X (Bluetooth driver changes), and bugs in BluePool can affect Bluetooth communication.

BluePool may cause issues with Bluetooth peripherals, such as wireless mice or keyboards, so please avoid using BluePool BETA if you don’t have a wired or built-in keyboard & mouse available in case of problems.

BluePool Stalls

Occasionally, a BluePool application can display a “Stalled...” status message. Most of the time this happens, it’s due to a short communication delay with the Bluetooth process, which recovers in a few seconds.

In rare cases, a stall persists for an extended period (a minute or more), which can also affect communication with Bluetooth peripherals. Below are some troubleshooting steps, in case an extended stall doesn’t resolve itself:

 • Quit & restart the host application
• If the application refuses to quit, try force quitting (Command+Option+ESC to bring up the “Force Quit” dialog)
• If there’s still problems quitting, or there’s an error restarting the app, try resetting Mac OS X’s Bluetooth process:
 • Run Activity Monitor (in /Applications/Utilities/)
• On the Activity Monitor window, select “All Processes” from the “Show” popup menu in the upper right
• Select “blued” from the main process list
• Press the “Stop” button in the upper left to quit the selected “blued” process (it will automatically restart)
• If Bluetooth issues persist, try rebooting the machine (note that an unresponsive “blued” process may interfere with shutdown, so if the Mac gets stuck on the shutdown screen, hold down the power button until it shuts off)

Run Logs

BluePool writes detailed info about its runtime actions to the Mac OS X system log. These log messages are very useful when investigating problems - please send in your run logs when reporting issues:

 • Run the Console application (in /Applications/Utilities/)
• Select “All Messages” from the Log List on the left side of the main window (if you don’t see a list with “All Messages” as the first item, select “View>Show Log List” from the main menu)
• Enter “BluePool” in the Filter field in the upper right corner of the main window
• Select all of the messages from the message list, then copy & paste them into an email to: bluepool (AT) twilightedge (DOT) com

For Best Results

• Locate your machine within 10 feet of another machine (you don’t have to be in range of all machines as long as there’s a chain)
• Try to maintain an open line-of-sight between machines (objects in between can interfere with the wireless signal)
• Turn off and unpair with any unused Bluetooth peripherals
• If you relocate your machine more than a few feet, press the “RESCAN” button to identify a new set of nearby machines
• Avoid pressing “RESCAN” unless a previous scan fails or you relocate, since scans can interfere with other wireless devices

Contact

If you run BlueBook/BluePool BETA with or without problems, please send a report (with run logs from as many of the machines as possible) to: bluepool (AT) twilightedge (DOT) com
